2017: Cruising the Galapagos on the Galapagos Odyssey (ISF)

9 days from Quito to Guayaquil

Some say the giant tortoises that live in the Galapagos Islands are lazy, because they can spend 16 hours per day resting. We don't think that's lazy-it's efficient and smart! You know what else is efficient and smart? Letting Monograms handle all the details of your Galapagos Islands vacation. After all, on this 9-day vacation package, we've arranged your hotel and cruise accommodations (with porterage), most of your meals, sightseeing, and private airport transfers for your intra-vacation flights. Plus, we've arranged for you to have a Local Host in Quito, a friend in the city who will answer your questions, offer suggestions, and help ensure your vacation runs smoothly.

Your vacation begins in Quito, where your Local Host will greet you with a warm welcome and materials to help you become familiar with the city. The next day, after your included breakfast, we'll pick you up at your selected hotel for a private sightseeing tour with a local expert, someone who knows Quito's inside stories and must-see sights, such as San Francisco Plaza Church, dating to the 16th century, and Independence Square, the heart of Old Town.

Then, the highlight of your vacation begins with a flight to San Cristobal Island for a 5-night cruise of the Galapagos Islands on board the Galapagos Odyssey. You'll visit San Cristobal Island, where you'll learn about the island's giant tortoise population; Espanola Island, home of the waved albatross, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, Galapagos hawks, Sally Lightfoot crabs, sea lions, marine iguanas, and lava lizards; Floreana Island, where you'll visit Post Office Bay to see the famous wooden barrel placed there in 1793 to serve as a post office; Santa Fe Island, where you'll walk with your Naturalist and have the opportunity to snorkel with sea lions and tropical fish; Plaza Island, home to hybrid iguanas that have resulted from crossing a male marine iguana with a female land iguana; North Seymour Island, where male frigatebirds try to attract a mate by inflating their bright red throat sacs; Santa Cruz Island, a major nesting site for sea turtles and home to two barges abandoned by the U.S. during WWII; and Mosquera Islet, with one of the largest populations of sea lions as well as shorebirds and Sally Lightfoot crabs. On some of the islands, you'll take walks for the chance to see impressive views and have the opportunity to snorkel with green sea turtles, sea lions, and more!

Isn't it time you visited the Galapagos Islands? With the accommodations we've reserved, the meals we've included, the guides and sightseeing we've arranged, and the private airport transportation, the only thing for you to do is enjoy yourself! Go ahead and be smart and efficient like the tortoises who call the Galapagos home-let Monograms do all the work while you have all the fun!

Day 3San Cristobal IslandUpon arrival, transfer to the CERRO COLORADO TORTOISE RESERVE, where you will learn about the island's giant tortoise population and measures taken to help preserve and breed these endangered species. The center includes a large corral, a visitor's center, breeding center and an interpretative trail. Along this trail it is possible to see different species of native and endemic plants as well as birds like the San Cristobal Mockingbird, Yellow Warblers, many species of finch, and the Galapagos flycatcher. Next, continue to Puerto Chino beach and enjoy the view at El Mirador before boarding the Galapagos Odyssey for your 5-night cruise. (B,L,D)
Day 4Cruising: Espanola IslandAt PUNTA SUAREZ, look for the waved albatross, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and Galapagos hawks. This rocky land spot sustains one of the most impressive and varied colonies of sea birds in the Galapagos. Along its southern shore, high cliffs rise up from the sea affording the visitor spectacular views of soaring birds and the impressive blowhole that shoots water up 50 feet. Other wildlife includes Sally Lightfoot crabs, sea lions, marine iguanas, and lava lizards. Later, visit GARDNER BAY, which has an excellent beach for snorkeling where you can see manta rays, green sea turtles, and the occasional shark! (B,L,D)
Day 5Cruising: Floreana IslandArrive at PUNTA CORMORANT, where you will see flamingos, stilts, pintail ducks, and several species of finch. This site is home to one of the best Flamingo lagoons in the Galapagos; it is situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintail ducks and other migratory birds. The beaches on this island are distinct: The 'Green Beach' is named so due to its green color, which comes from a high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the 'Four Sand Beach' is composed of white coral. This afternoon, visit POST OFFICE BAY and see the famous wooden barrel that was placed here in 1793 to serve as a post office. The idea is to leave your own postcards or letters in the barrel and take with you any that you can hand deliver. Apart from being the site of the Post Office, this was the landing area for some of the first colonists. Continue to the north of the island and will ascend an elevated slope to enjoy a beautiful vista at BARONESS LOOKOUT. It is said that Baroness Eloisa von Wagner loved this place and spent several hours watching the horizon. Within walking distance are ruins of her house. From this lookout, the landscape covers the coastline from the Enderby Islet to Post Office Bay, as well as the flamingo lagoon and wide Palo Santo forest. (B,L,D)
Day 6Cruising: Santa Fe & Plaza IslandsSANTA FE is home to endemic species, like the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, and one of the islands' two species of lands iguanas. There are some theories which assert this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. After disembarkation in the beautiful, clear waters you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail many salt bushes can be seen as well giant prickly pear cactus, gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. After a walk with your Naturalist, where you will enjoy impressive scenic views, snorkel with the playful sea lions and tropical fish. On PLAZA ISLAND, see the hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. They are unique, recognizable at first glance by their black/gray color, with a land iguana's crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The big population of iguanas is due to the presence of tunas, their favorite food. Swallow Tailed Gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other sea bids as: Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds and brown pelicans. South Plaza is also blessed with amazing landscapes of steep cliffs and bright, contrasting colors, with the surrounding waters and the characteristic plant - the Sesuvium. During the rainy season its color is a greenish to yellowish tone and in the dry season (end of June through January) a bright red. (B,L,D)
Day 7Cruising: North Seymour & Santa Cruz IslandsA walk on NORTH SEYMOUR reveals a large male population of magnificent frigate birds trying to attract a mate by inflating their bright red throat sacs. Other fauna found here include blue-footed boobies, land iguanas, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas. This island was formed by a series of submarine lavas containing layers of sediment that were uplifted by tectonic activity, and is characterized by its arid vegetation. Visit LAS BACHAS on Santa Cruz Island, which is a major nesting site for sea turtles. There is a nearby lagoon that often has flamingos and other migratory birds. Also see two barges abandoned by the U.S. during WWII when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategic point to protect the Panama Canal. (B,L,D)
Day 8GuayaquilAt MOSQUERA ISLET, see a large population of sea lions, shorebirds, and Sally Lightfoot crabs. Located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour, this reef of rocks and coral (the result of an uprising) is only 160 meters across at its narrowest width. Afterward, head to Baltra for your flight to Guayaquil. (B)
