Day 1 : ARRIVE IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
Arrive in Budapest and check-in to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to relax or begin exploring this beautiful city.
Day 2 : BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
Your morning excursion includes sightseeing in Buda and Pest. From historic Buda Castle, enjoy a spectacular view of the twin cities spread over both banks of the river. Your tour also includes the Fisherman's Bastion, Royal Palace, St. Stephen's Basilica, and Heroes' Square. (B)
Day 3 : BUDAPEST - EMBARKATION
After checking out of your hotel, you will have a free morning to explore Budapest on your own before boarding your luxurious ship. As an alternative, you can take an optional excursion to Puszta, the great Hungarian Plain that stretches across to the East. The excursion includes a lunch that features Hungary's beloved national dish, goulash. Tonight, meet your fellow passengers at the Welcome Dinner. Later, the ship cruises overnight to Bratislava. Day 4 : BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA
This afternoon, arrive in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. You have your choice of two tours today. The first option is a walking tour of the city's major sites, including the Old Town Hall, the stunning Mirbach Palace, and St. Martin's Cathedral. As an alternative, choose a "Communist History" tour that includes such architectural landmarks as the Radio Building, Liberty Square and the Soviet War Memorial. Day 5 : VIENNA, AUSTRIA
You will have a guided tour this morning of romantic Vienna, with highlights that includes the Opera House, the Ringstrasse and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Alternatively, join an optional excursion this afternoon to Schonbrunn Palace. This evening you may also enjoy an optional Mozart and Strauss concert in one of Vienna's great formal concert halls. Day 6 : DURNSTEIN - MELK
Early this morning, you will arrive in the Wachau Valley and have a walking tour of Durnstein, one of the prettiest towns along the Danube. As you wander down medieval cobblestoned streets, you will see 16th-century town houses, wine taverns, and the magnificent blue facade of the Baroque Stiftskirche. High above the town, look for the ruins of a castle where Richard the Lionhearted was once imprisoned and held for ransom. Your tour will also include a wine tasting at a local tavern. The ship arrives in Melk late this afternoon, where you will tour the city's spectacular Abbey, one of Europe's largest Baroque monasteries and the inspiration for Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose. Day 7 : LINZ - PASSAU, GERMANY
This morning the ship arrives in Linz, where you will have the choice of two different excursions. The first is an optional excursion to Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, where you will take a walking tour of the historic center now known to millions as the setting for the "Sound of Music." Alternatively, remain on the ship and cruise through scenic Upper Austria to Passau. Located where the rivers Inn and Ilz join the Danube, this 2,000-year-old city is noted for its gothic and Italian baroque architecture. A late afternoon walking tour of Passau will take you along the cobblestone streets of Old Town where you will see the city fortifications and St. Stephan's Cathedral, home to the largest pipe organ in Europe. Day 8 : REGENSBURG
In the early afternoon arrive in Regensburg, one of Germany's best preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have your choice of two different tours here. The first is a guided walking tour of the city's architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 A.D. Alternatively, visit the Audi Factory in Ingolstadt, where a member of the Audi team will take you on a guided tour of the Audi Museum or the fabled production line (subject to availability).The ship departs after dinner. Day 9 : KELHEIM - NUREMBERG
Enjoy a morning of scenic cruising through the Main-Danube Canal and the beautiful Altmuhl Valley. This afternoon, you will learn about the medieval history of Nuremberg and see the 900-year-old ramparts that surround the city, as well as the Imperial Castle and Old Town Hall. As an alternative, choose the "World War II History" tour that focuses on Nuremberg's role as the former headquarters of the Third Reich. You will see the infamous Zeppelin field once used to hold Nazi rallies and the Justice Palace courtroom (when open to the public) where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946. Day 10 : NUREMBERG - MUNICH
Today, you will travel by train to Munich, the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany's largest cities. Your Cruise Manager will offer suggestions on what to see while in town and will take you to lunch in a local restaurant. Day 11 : BAMBERG
This morning you will arrive in the medieval town of Bamberg, where you will enjoy a walking tour of this picturesque town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the cathedral, the Old Town Hall that straddles the river, and serpentine streets lined with charming houses. Sample some of Bamberg's famous smoked beer at lunchtime. This afternoon, we continue down the Main River en route to Schweinfurt, arriving this evening. The ship will cruise overnight. (B,L,D)
Day 12 : KITZINGEN - WURZBURG
On your morning walking tour of Kitzingen, you'll see the town's famous 13th-century Leaning Tower, the Old Main Bridge, Kitzingen Church and the Renaissance Town Hall. Later, the Aulic Council and Wine Queen will welcome you to Germany's oldest wine cellar where you will taste several different wines and learn about region's wine-making history. This afternoon, take a guided tour of Wurzburg showing you all of the major sights or visit the Residenz Palace and gardens, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's best examples of Baroque architecture. As an alternative, r choose an optional tour to medieval Rothenburg, a beautiful walled city situated on the Romantic Road. Rejoin the ship in Wurzberg and continue cruising overnight. (B,L,D)
Day 13 : WERTHEIM
This morning, you will have a guided walking tour Wertheim, a quaint German town known for intricate glassworks and charming medieval architecture. After lunch, the ship will cruise towards Mainz. (B,L,D)
Day 14 : MAINZ - RUDESHEIM - KOBLENZ
Arrive in Mainz after breakfast and decide between two different excursions. One is a walking tour of the city, where you will visit the famous Gutenberg Museum and see one of the world's first printed Bibles. Early this afternoon, arrive in Rudesheim and visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, which houses a great collection of robotic and self-playing musical instruments from the 18th-20th centuries. As an alternative, take an excursion to Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university town, where you will visit Heidelberg Castle and its Great Vat, and also have a walking tour of Old Heidelberg. Later, enjoy a scenic cruise through the Rhine River Gorge, passing by dramatic castle ruins and the infamous Lorelei Rock en route to Koblenz. Day 15 : COCHEM - ZELL
Today, visit the fairytale village of Cochem, a scenic wine village nestled in the Mosel Valley. Walk along narrow cobblestone streets lined with medieval houses before taking a guided tour of hilltop Reichsburg Castle, which offers spectacular views of the river below. Day 16 : ZELL - TRIER - LUXEMBOURG
After a free morning in Zell, the ship will cruise to Trier, Germany's oldest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, arriving mid-afternoon. Your guided tour will reveal the area's rich Roman history, with stops at the old Roman amphitheater, Roman Baths, Basilica of Constantine and the Porta Nigra gate, dating back to 180 A.D. Day 17 : LUXEMBOURG - DISEMBARKATION - PARIS, FRANCE
This morning, bid farewell to your luxurious river cruise ship. If you are continuing on to Paris you will have a panoramic tour of this Grand Duchy as you are transferred to its capital, and stop en route to see the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, final resting place of U.S. General Patton. In Luxembourg, you will have a guided walking tour and free time for lunch on your own before boarding a TGV high-speed train to Paris. Arrive mid-afternoon and check in to your hotel. Day 18 : PARIS
Enjoy some of Paris' most famous sights during this morning's guided tour, including the Champs Elysees, Place de la Concorde, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.
